Key Scriptures

• 1 Corinthians 13:4–7

• 1 John 4:7–10

• Romans 5:8

• John 13:34–35

Introduction

In today’s world, love is often described as a feeling. People say things like “I fell in love” or “I don’t feel the same anymore.” But the Bible describes love very differently. According to Scripture, love is not simply an emotion. It is a character that comes from God Himself and is expressed through actions.

Understanding biblical love helps us see who God is, how God loves us, and how we are called to love others.

Understanding the Passage

1 Corinthians 13:4–7 gives one of the clearest descriptions of love in the Bible.

The apostle Paul explains that love is shown not only in what we feel but in how we act toward others.

Love is described through qualities such as patience, kindness, humility, forgiveness, and perseverance.

These qualities reflect the character of Christ.

Biblical love is not based on mood or convenience. It is a commitment to seek the good of others, even when it is difficult.

Word Insight

The word often used for love in the New Testament is Agape. Agape refers to a self-giving, sacrificial love.

This is the type of love God shows toward us. We see this clearly in Romans 5:8. God loved us before we loved Him. His love was not based on our worthiness, but on His grace.

This shows that biblical love is not dependent on emotions alone. It is a choice rooted in God’s character.

Reflection Questions

1) When people talk about love today, how is it usually described?

2) How is biblical love different from the way the world describes love?

3) Looking at 1 Corinthians 13:4–7, which description of love stands out to you the most? Why?

4) Why do you think patience and kindness are important in love?

5) What does Romans 5:8 teach us about God’s love?

Living It Out

Biblical love begins with receiving God’s love. When we understand how deeply God loves us, it changes

how we treat others. This week try to practice love in simple ways:

• Show patience with someone who frustrates you

• Speak kindly to someone who feels overlooked

• Forgive someone who has hurt you

Prayer

Lord, thank You for showing us what true love looks like. Help us understand Your love more deeply and teach us to love others the way You have loved us. Shape our hearts so that our love reflects Your character.

Amen.
